Abstract

“A descriptive study was conducted to assess the knowledge among the mothers of malnourished children regarding the malnutrition and its effect on mental health in Shivalik Hospital, Dehradun.” Quantitative research approach was used in this study. The conceptual framework for this study is based on conceptual general system model. The research design used for the study was descriptive research design. The data was collected using non-probability convenient sampling. Percentage distribution of mother according to their age in which 16.70% mothers are between 18-22 years, 25% are between 23-27 years, 25% are between 28-32 years and 33.30% are between 33-38 years. Percentage distribution of mother according to their educational status in which 8.30% mothers have no formal education, 33.30% mothers had completed primary school, 33.30% mother’s had complete high school and 25% mother’s had graduate and above. Percentage distribution of mother according to their occupation in which 50% mothers are housewives, 25% mothers are self-employee, 16.70% mothers are government employee and 8.30% mother’s are private employee. Percentage distribution of mother according to their type of family in which that 41.70% mother’s have nuclear family and 58.30% mother’s are in joint family.Percentage distribution of mother according to their no.of under five children in which that 33.30% mother’s have 1 under five children, 30% mother’s have 2 under five children and 36.70% mother’s have 3 or >3 under five children.Percentage distribution of mother according to their income in which 26.70% mother’s have < Rs 5000 income, 40% mother’s have Rs. 5001- Rs.8000 income, 16.70% mother’s have Rs. 8001- Rs.10,000 income and16.70% mother’s have >Rs.10,001 income.Percentage distribution of mother according to their religion in which 60% mother’s are Hindu, 23.30% mother’s are Muslim, 8.30% mother’s are Christian and 8.30% are belongs to other religion.Percentage distribution of mother according to their no.of children in which 30% mother’s have 1 child,36.70% mother’s have 2 children,16.70% mother’s have 3 children and 16.70% mother’s have >3 children.Percentage distribution of mother according to their type of food consumption in which 60% mother’s are vegetarian and 40% of mother’s are non-vegetarian . Percentage distribution of mother according to their babies weight at birth in which 36.70% mother’s have 1kg of child at birth,26.70% mother’s have 1.5kg of child at birth, 20% mother’s have 2kg of child at birth and 16.70% mother’s have >2kg of child at birth.Percentage distribution of mother according to their babies birth spacing in which 16.70% mother’s have 0-1 year of birth space between children ,38.30% mother’s have 2-3 years of birth space between children, 28.30% mother’s have 4-5 years of birth space between children and 16.70% mother’s have >5 years of birth space between children. Percentage distribution of according to their knowledge in which 16.70% of mother’s have adequate practice, 20% mother’s have moderately adequate practice and 63.30% mother’s have inadequate practice.
