Mucosa emerged as an attractive site for both local and systemic drug delivery. In the last decades, bio-adhesive based systems with customizable release profiles have been extensively investigated for a wide range of pharmaceuticals. Mucoadhesive drug delivery systems particularly suitable for drugs which have local action, drugs undergo extensive pre-systemic metabolism, drugs which have maximum absorption, drugs with narrow absorption window and drugs with a narrow therapeutic index. Contact time, surface area, surface charge, molecular weight of polymeric carriers determines the extent of mucoadhesion, consequently establish the therapeutic goal of the drug delivery systems. This review aims to provide an overview on emerging application and recent patent on mucoadhesive drug delivery systems delivered by various routes.
