Title

The Great War and the Crisis of Masculinity: the Quest of an Alternative Masculinity in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises

Authors

Abstract

This study seeks to explore the impact of the horrors of the First World War (known as Great War) on the psyche of the protagonist Jake Barnes in Hemingway’s celebrated novel The Sun Also Rises (1926). Alienated and disillusioned, Jake Barnes suffered male anxiety and underwent through the crisis of masculinity. This research argues that Jake’s internal struggle to deal with his war injury and mental agony adds spiritual dimension to his persona. The paper affirms that the entire narrative is Jake’s quest of an alternative masculinity. This study also throws some light on how the Great War challenged the traditional Victorian code of heroism and brought in a war torn, weak and vulnerable hero.
