Title

A pre-experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding ill effects of cigarette smoking on health among teenage students of a selected higher secondary school of Anantnag, J&K

Abstract

ABSTRACT: A study to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding ill effects of cigarette smoking on health among teenage students of a selected higher secondary school of Anantnag, J&K” Objectives: 1. To assess the pre-test knowledge regarding ill effects of cigarette smoking on health 2. To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding ill effects of cigarette smoking on health 3. To find the association between the selected demographic variables with pre-test level of knowledge regarding ill effects of cigarette smoking on health Method: The study was based on General System model of von Bertalanffy. Evaluatory approach was adopted for this study and pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design was taken for this study. The study was conducted at Govt. Boys Model Higher Secondary School Brakpora, Anantnag, J&K. The sample size was 30 teenage students and non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to select sample. Data was collected from the teenage students to assess the level of knowledge by using structured knowledge questionnaire before and after the implementation of structured teaching programme. The collected data were tabulated and analysed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Majority 21(70%) of teenage students had average knowledge, 6(20%) had poor knowledge and 3(10%) students scored good marks in pre-test but in the post-test, majority 24(80%) had good knowledge and 6(20%) of them scored average level of knowledge and none of them 0(0%) was having poor level of knowledge. Thus, the result showed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test level of knowledge regarding ill effects of cigarette smoking on health among teenage students. The obtained t- value (9.212) was greater than the table value at 0.05 level of significance. Conclusion: The Structured Teaching Programme (STP) was effective (p<0.05) to improve the level of knowledge regarding ill effects of cigarette smoking on health among teenage students.
