Title

Feasibility Study of Free Cooling and Heating for a Small Residential Building at Bhuj, Gujarat, India

Abstract

In this study, the viability of passive cooling in residential spaces within the temperate climate of Kutch is examined using standardized adaptive comfort criteria. Ventilation-based free-cooling is identified as an energy-efficient cooling method. To maintain comfortable room temperatures and reduce energy consumption for mechanical ventilation, variable airflow rates are necessary when using ventilation for cooling. Consequently, free-cooling relies on the availability of cooling potential and appropriate airflow control mechanisms. The research focuses on the effectiveness of night ventilation techniques in the hot-dry climate of Bhuj, Kutch, for residential buildings. The study evaluates the impact of various natural ventilation approaches on the indoor thermal environment of Bhuj homes, using data from a comprehensive field experiment. Thermal performance measurements were taken from a corner terrace house in Bhuj to determine the efficiency of free cooling ventilation as a passive cooling strategy. The experiment compared four configurations: no ventilation, full ventilation, daytime ventilation, and night-time ventilation. The findings indicate that night ventilation offers improved thermal comfort for residents in Bhuj, Kutch, and has a significant impact on the results.
