Title

Arteriovenous malformations of the head and neck: current concepts in management-Review

Abstract

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare vascular anomalies that can occur in any part of the body, including the head and neck region. These lesions are characterized by abnormal connections between arteries and veins, which can lead to a variety of clinical manifestations, including bleeding, swelling, pain, and functional impairment. This article reviews the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of AVMs in the head and neck region. Diagnosis is typically based on a combination of clinical examination, imaging studies, and biopsy. Imaging studies such as computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and angiography may aid in the diagnosis of AVMs. In terms of management, the primary goal of treating AVMs is to achieve hemostasis and prevent the progression of the lesion. Treatment options include surgical resection, embolization, radiation therapy, or a combination of these modalities. In conclusion, AVMs are rare vascular anomalies that require a thorough clinical evaluation and multimodal management. Treatment decisions should be individualized based on patient and lesion characteristics, to achieve complete cure while minimizing neurologic and functional morbidity. Further research is needed to better understand the pathogenesis and management of AVMs in the head and neck region.
