Title

BREAKING OFF THE SELF EFFACING ROLE BY FEMALE CHARACTERS IN MONICA ALI'S BRICK LANE

Abstract

Men are considered to have a monopoly or dominant role in making decisions and women are expected to play a submissive role. Society and community disapprove of women’s taking roles in public spaces being unmonitored by their husbands and family. Patriarchal power hinders the independence or self-dependence of women. Furthermore, it is these ‘traditional roles' that denounce women to be subservient and to exist as of lower stature to men. Gender inequality indeed persists in several countries. Women have been undergoing hardships from the restrictions of the traditional setup of the belief system. Nevertheless, women in developing countries can be viewed as victims of patriarchy. This paper investigates to explain such conditions of developing countries where the female is oppressed by males. The use of authority by men in an unjust manner is critically examined in Monica Ali’s novel Brick Lane. After reading this paper, one will agree with Ali’s hope to infuse the desire in women to go on the life journey of autonomy, rather than being a woman who is constantly mystified and stereotyped by men and society. This is studied in the light of the views postulated by feminist theorist Simone De Beauvoir in her book ‘The Second Sex.’
