Title

Electoral Behaviour among Women Voters of North Goa - A Case Study

Abstract

Amartya Sen coined the phrase "missing women" in 1990 after establishing that there is an alarmingly low proportion of women to men in many parts of the developing globe. In countries like China and India, the sex ratio has gotten worse, showing a significant disdain for women. He estimated that gender inequality was to blame for the disappearance of approximately 100 million women. Women are voting more frequently these days, and from 16.7% in 1962 to just 4.4% in 2009, the gender gap in general elections has shrunk. Due to the fact that 48% of Indians are female (according to the 2011 census), it is crucial for women to vote. Even if more voters are becoming aware that elections have repercussions, women's marginalisation makes it even more crucial for them to vote and exercise influence. They have the power to decide what kind of life they want for themselves. Voters also influence policy and bring about change. They have realised that the decision will be made for them if they do not cast a ballot. They promote a certain agenda and may even be advocates for a particular problem that Indian women experience, such as child marriage, gender equality, etc., depending on the candidate and political party they support. As elections are decided by people who vote, Indian women are learning that by not casting a ballot, they are giving up some of their voice. The research paper has made an attempt to adopt an proactive approach in determining the set of parameters which influences the voting behaviour of women voters. The study has stressed on the need of more awareness among the women voters.
