Title

Comparative Study of Uncatalysed Oxidation of Valine and Arginine by Cerium (IV) in Aqueous Sulphuric Acid Medium

Abstract

The comparative study of oxidation of valine and arginine by cerium (IV) has been studied spectrophotometrically in the presence of aqueous sulphuric acid medium. The reaction was studied under pseudo first order conditions with respect to cerium (IV). The reaction show first order kinetics with respect to Ce (IV) and fractional order with respect to valine and arginine. It is found that pseudo first order rate constant, kobs decreases with increase of [HSO4-] and increases with the increase of [H+]. The stoichiometry of the reaction was found to be 1:2. The main oxidation product of oxidation of valine were identified as 2-methylpropanal while 1-(4-oxobutyl) guanidine was identified as oxidation product of oxidation of arginine. Ce (III), ammonia and carbon dioxide were identified as the by product. Added products do not have any significant effect on the reaction rate.
