A pilot survey was conducted for analyzing the socio-economic status of the tribals in the Nilgiris district. Due to the impact of many research studies and the introduction of various schemes and government policies many tribal groups have managed to come out from their forest land and have got the opportunities to live in the plain as well as the mainland areas. They have got the opportunities to have education, access to proper food materials, and proper shelter. In addition to their traditional occupation, they are now able to do other jobs like coolie workers, private jobs, sales jobs, and also government jobs. Due to the financial assistance from the government at least 90% of tribals are able to have their own house with proper construction methods. While considering their educational status among the illiterates, 12.6% are female illiterates and 6.35 are male illiterates. The widened gender gap in education has reveles in the employment status and also the job profile.
