Title

SYNTACTIC DEVIATIONS IN THE ONLINE ACADEMIC WRITING OF PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION STUDENTS: BASIS FOR INTERVENTION

Abstract

Communication skills, whether oral or written, are vital for a student's academic success and future career prospects. This linguistic research analyzed the Thirty-five (35) Purposive Communication students’ grammatical errors in their academic writing. The researchers used Corder’s (1945) Error Analysis approach to examine the syntactic errors made by the participants by identifying, describing, and explaining. A focus group discussion was also conducted to ascertain an in-depth understanding of the errors committed by the participants. An expert was also sought to ensure the analyzed data was accurate according to standard acceptable English. The result indicated deviations in Subject-Verb Agreement, Punctuations, use of Prepositions, Mechanics, and Parallelism. Participants highlighted their lack of awareness of the errors committed, fear of being corrected, issues with preparation, challenges in vocabulary, and focusing on content rather than grammar as themes that emerged in their qualitative responses. This has shown that the participants still struggle to write quality sentences to approximate effective writing communication. The researchers suggested language enrichment activities to address the difficulties committed by the participants. Furthermore, the data point for the teachers and supervisors to conduct necessary interventions to correct the errors committed by the student participants.
