Title

DEPRESSION AND NUTRITION

Abstract

For decades, medication has been the primary treatment approach for mental health problems, with psychotherapy playing a secondary role. However, many antidepressant drugs have been associated with severe side effects, leading to noncompliance among patients and an increased risk of suicide or institutionalization. Alongside age, genetics, and environmental factors, nutrition emerges as an under-recognized yet vital factor in the development and management of mental health issues, particularly depression. Evidence suggests that nutrition plays a significant role in the onset, progression, and prevention of specific mental health problems, such as depression. Patients with mental disorders often exhibit nutritional deficiencies in key elements like omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, minerals, and neurotransmitter precursor amino acids. The emerging discipline of nutritional neuroscience underscores the intricate connection between nutrition and depression, highlighting how dietary patterns influence human cognition, behavior, and emotions. Studies reveal that many Asian and American populations have dietary intake patterns that lack essential nutrients, further exacerbating mental health concerns. However, daily supplementation of vital nutrients has shown promise in reducing symptoms in patients with mental disorders. This paper delves into the significance of various nutrients in mental health, with a specific focus on depression, providing valuable insights into a novel and complementary approach to mental health treatment. By acknowledging the role of nutrition in mental health and incorporating this understanding into clinical practices, healthcare professionals can offer more holistic and effective treatment options for patients dealing with depression.
