Title

Environmental ethics from the perspective of Maqasid al shariah

Abstract

The environment that Allah created for the survival of human beings is beautiful, glamorous, and beneficial. However, the selfish human hand often extended to its sides and conditions, instead of thanking and protecting this great blessing and means of survival, spoiled and destroyed it and hit his own foot with an axe. Still, if it has been distorted or lost its beauty, then it must be returned to its divine natural origin so that man can enjoy it, interact with it, live in its beauty, and protect it from all the scourges of pollution and damage. So Shari‘ah and its Higher Objectives (Maqāsid) provide a comprehensive approach that guarantees the care of the environment and its protection from all defects. It considers breaching of environment a breach of religion and a departure from the approach of the Lord of the Worlds. The Shari‘ah came to establish the interests of the servants in the world and the hereafter, or in the immediate and the future. And that the purpose of the law of creation is to preserve their religion, themselves, their offspring, their minds, and their wealth, these are called the five essentials. The interests that human life does not exist without. Caring for the environment, preserving it, and reforming it achieves the purposes of the Shari‘ah and its five necessities. Then, its corruption, pollution, depletion of its resources, and disruption of its balance, that is what we express Islamically with the phrase (corruption on earth) that wastes these purposes and reaps all these necessities.
