Title

PREVALENCE AND FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH MONO AND MULTI- DRUG RESISTANT TUBERCULOSIS IN DEPARTMENT OF PULMONARY MEDICINE IN A TERITIARY CARE HOSPITAL, KURNOOL

Abstract

AIM: The Aim of the study is to identify the prevalence and factors associated with drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB). Objective: The objectives of the study are to evaluate the prevalence of drug-resistant Tuberculosis. To assess the factors that are related to mono- and multi-drug-resistant TB. To improve patient quality of life by providing proper counseling regarding the use of medication. Methodology: Our study is a prospective, Observational, hospital-based clinical study. The subjects involved are the in-patients in the pulmonology department at the Government General Hospital attached to Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool. The sample was collected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Conclusion: The present study concludes that males are more prone to DR-TB (66%) than females. The most commonly affected age group was 21–35, with common symptoms of cough (with or without sputum), chest pain, hemoptysis, weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, and shortness of breath. In our study, there were more newly diagnosed cases than previous cases. The types of DR-TB cases reported are multidrug resistance and monodrug resistance, at 16 and 84, respectively. The recommended types of regimens for DR-TB are shorter oral regimens, H-mono/poly DR-TB regimens, and all oral longer regimens. In our study, the major risk factors were close contact with TB patients, poor living conditions, alcohol, and smoking.
