Title

A Study on Strength of Brake Calipers using Different Engineering Materials through Finite Element Methodology

Abstract

A disc brake caliper slows or stops the rotation of a wheel. When a car is braked, its momentum is converted into mechanical energy, which is eventually dissipated as heat. In this investigation, the contact pressure distributions at the disc interfaces are analyzed using a detailed three-dimensional finite element model of a real automobile disc brake. The brake-disc FE models are built in ANSYS 17.0, a simulation package based on the finite element method (FEM). A disc brake system's modeling at various levels and contact pressure distribution simulations are also investigated. It covers the Contact analysis and heat analysis Finite Element Method techniques used in the automotive sector. Investigation is done into how the contact pressure distribution and angular velocity affect disc brakes. We use a variety of materials, including structural steel, aluminum alloy, titanium alloy, and carbon fiber composites, in our project. Finally, after comparing different materials and performing tests to determine their maximum and minimum stresses and deformations, we have discovered that carbon fiber is the best material available due to its durability and light weight.
