Title

A PILOT STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING APPROACH IN THE TEACHING OF ECONOMICS FOR SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN 24 PARGANAS, WEST BENGAL

Abstract

This pilot study investigates the effectiveness of the Cooperative Learning (CL) approach in teaching Economics to senior secondary school students in 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The primary objective of the study was to compare the academic performance, engagement, and classroom participation of students taught using the Cooperative Learning method with those who received traditional teaching. The study involved two groups: an experimental group, which participated in Cooperative Learning activities, and a control group, which followed conventional lecture-based teaching methods. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments, classroom observations, and student surveys. The results revealed a significant improvement in the academic performance of the experimental group, with a 30% increase in post-test scores, compared to a 15% increase in the control group. The statistical analysis showed that the difference in academic performance between the two groups was statistically significant, with a p-value of 0.05. This suggests that the Cooperative Learning approach led to enhanced academic outcomes for students in the experimental group. Additionally, observations indicated higher levels of student engagement and participation in the experimental group. Students actively participated in group discussions, problem-solving activities, and peer teaching, contributing to a more dynamic and collaborative learning environment. A majority of the students reported that Cooperative Learning helped them understand complex economic concepts better and improved their communication and teamwork skills. Teacher feedback highlighted the positive impact of Cooperative Learning on student motivation and collaboration, although challenges such as group dynamics and individual assessment were noted. Overall, the study concludes that Cooperative Learning is an effective pedagogical strategy for teaching Economics, fostering not only academic improvement but also critical life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Further studies are recommended to explore its long-term effects and refine implementation strategies.
