Title

A PILOT STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING APPROACH IN THE TEACHING OF POLITICAL SCIENCE FOR SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN 24 PARGANAS WEST BENGAL

Abstract

This pilot study explores the effectiveness of cooperative learning in teaching Political Science to senior secondary school students in 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The primary objective was to evaluate how cooperative learning impacts students' academic performance, engagement, and critical thinking skills. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design, with an experimental group taught using cooperative learning strategies and a control group taught through traditional methods. Data was collected through pre- and post-tests, student surveys, and teacher observations. The results of the study indicate that students in the experimental group showed significant improvement in their academic performance compared to the control group. The post-test scores of the experimental group were notably higher, suggesting that cooperative learning helped enhance students' understanding of Political Science concepts. Furthermore, students in the experimental group reported higher levels of engagement and active participation in class activities. These students were more involved in discussions, group work, and problem-solving tasks, demonstrating the positive impact of cooperative learning on their overall learning experience. In addition to academic benefits, the cooperative learning approach also fostered critical thinking skills, as students were encouraged to analyze and discuss political issues collaboratively. The study highlights that cooperative learning not only improves academic outcomes but also develops important social and cognitive skills necessary for future academic and professional success. This study contributes to the growing body of research on active learning strategies in secondary education and underscores the potential of cooperative learning in promoting deeper understanding and engagement among students. Based on the findings, the study recommends further research to explore the long-term effects of cooperative learning, as well as its application across various subjects and diverse student populations.
