Title

Inclusion and Exclusion: The Pragmatics of Class Consciousness in the “Doll’s house’ by Katherine Mansfield.

Abstract

Abstract Katherine Mansfield’s “The Doll’s House” is apparently a children’s story. But in fact it is a story on class consciousness and social bias. The children are taught class division right at a very young age and it impacts their childhood innocence. This paper explores how societal divisions based on wealth and status influence children’s perceptions and behaviors about others. This highlights the inclusion and exclusion policy in the society and generates prejudice in the children. They, at a very tender age, start learning the pragmatics of class and caste. Children tend to become very cruel without the element of softness and affection in them. The treatment given by the school children to the Kelvey sisters questions the structure of the so called progressive society supposed to be devoid of social hierarchy and prejudice.
