Adults with developmental difficulties, especially Autism Spectrum Disorder struggle with complex social relations like romantic relationships and tend to experience a lower success rate compared to neurotypical peers. The objective of this study was to review the previously existing literature on romantic experiences autistic adults have and highlight the factors that act as barriers to such relationships. Exploration of Autistic romantic relationships has only recently emerged and seems to be restricted to Western studies. This review integrates aspects of the Indian culture into the existing literature. The study will utilize academic databases such as PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Scinapse, and Google Scholar to search for relevant articles, journals, and publications. The review identified a lack of social opportunities, inaccessibility, sensory challenges, poor bodily awareness, poor self-esteem, psychiatric comorbidities, the label of a diagnosis, and stigma as the primary barriers to autistic romantic experiences.
