Abstract
Nyctanthes arbortristis, a member of the Oleaceae family, is a significant medicinal large shrub commonly recognized as 'Harshringar,' 'Parijat,' and 'Night jasmine.' India boasts a remarkable diversity of medicinal plants, and this shrub is predominantly cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe. Nyctanthes arbortristis, known for its ornamental appeal, offers medicinal value throughout its various parts, making it a versatile plant. Throughout history, this plant and its extracts have been used to treat a variety of ailments, earning it a well-deserved reputation as a valuable resource for medicinal and industrial applications. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Nyctanthes arbortristis, encompassing pharmacognostic descriptions, traditional uses, extraction methods, chemical constituents in its different parts (leaves, flowers, seeds, bark, stem, and roots), phytochemical assessments, properties, and medicinal applications.
