Santiniketan, by common perception, is often made out to be local and national, even though from its inception and through its prime years of growth (1919–1951), it was undeniably enriched by the presence of some of the most global Indian intellectuals of the colonial period. Rabindranath Tagore being the most prominent among them – whose thinking, perspective on the world and transnational interactions moulded the ethos of the place. The foundational and operational principles of Santiniketan were universal, making it very much a part of the global scheme of thought at the time.
