Title

Effectiveness and safety of ginger in reduction of pregnancy induced nausea and vomiting

Abstract

Introduction :- Pregnancy is a normal process that results in physiological and psychological, metabolic and social changes occur in mothers. These changes take place from the time of conception until the time of delivery and affect every system in the body. But some pregnancy changes become painful for pregnant women if not treated on time and may affect health of mother and outcome of pregnancy, such as nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP). Up to 85% of pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting (NV) during pregnancy. Nausea and Vomiting (N/V) are unpalatable manifestations, which impinge upon the overall well-being, the productivity and might result in hospitalization of pregnant women if not managed on time. There is growing evidence concerning the efficacy of ginger in alleviating Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy (NVP). Therefore, it is sought to conduct a systematic review to explore the efficacy of ginger for NVP. Ginger is being used widely to treat NVP now a days. Methods: Based on the objectives of the current review, inclusion and exclusion criteria were prepared and various data bases were used in the selection of studies. The collected studies were deeply checked and reviewed for clarity and authenticity of content and then has been used for the review. Search was done using electronic database such as pubmed, online journal, access open,Cmaj open, google scholar, online library etc.Total 188 studies were found on management of NVP.seven studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria of the study and these studies were included in the systematic review.Studies are done between 2011 to 2022. significance level was set at p ≤0.05. Results: This systematic review comprised seven trials with a total of 360 participants who were pregnant mothers. These studies showed that ginger can improve NVP in a statistically significant manner (P<0.05) during pregnancy. The results established that ginger has discernible influence on the intensity of nausea and vomiting scores and have substantial effect on pregnancy outcome in respect to mother and fetal health. Conclusions: This review suggests potential benefits of ginger in pregnancy where it significantly reduce nausea and vomiting episodes, and does not pose a risk for side-effects or adverse events during pregnancy. Based on evidence from this SR, ginger could be considered a harmless and possibly effective alternative option for women suffering from NVP. It also emphasized the need for conducting more studies with a better quality and that are using standardized dose and dosage forms to be able to conduct a meta-analysis.
