Abstract
Madagascar The Catharanthus roseus, also known as periwinkle, is a little blooming plant that originates from Madagascar. It has attracted considerable interest in the field of contemporary medicine because of its powerful pharmacological effects. Historically used in several traditional cures for conditions such as diabetes, malaria, and hypertension, current scientific investigations have emphasised its potential in modern medicinal uses. This study investigates the therapeutic capabilities of C. roseus, specifically examining its active alkaloids, vincristine and vinblastine, which play a crucial part in cancer therapy procedures. The discovery of vincristine and vinblastine, two vinca alkaloids obtained from C. roseus, has had a transformative impact on the area of cancer treatment. These medications work by suppressing cell division, therefore halting the growth of cancer cells. Vincristine has exceptional efficacy in the management of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and other haematologic malignancies, while vinblastine is used in the therapy of Hodgkin's lymphoma and testicular cancer. These alkaloids work by attaching to tubulin, a crucial protein that plays a role in cell division, therefore disrupting the creation of the mitotic spindle, which is important for cell division. Catharanthus roseus has considerable promise in the treatment of several ailments, in addition to its use in cancer therapy. This drug's antidiabetic characteristics are ascribed to its capacity to regulate insulin production and improve glucose absorption, making it an ideal option for managing diabetes. Moreover, the plant's extracts have shown antibacterial properties against several pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, indicating its potential in combating antibiotic resistance. Furthermore, research on the cardiovascular advantages of C. roseus suggests its potential in controlling hypertension. The alkaloids included in the plant have shown vasodilatory properties, perhaps leading to a decrease in blood pressure and enhancement of cardiovascular well-being. Catharanthus roseus has medicinal flexibility owing to its anti-inflammatory qualities, which have the potential to provide advantages in the treatment of inflammatory illnesses and autoimmune diseases.
