Title

EXPLORING THE ACHIEVEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS IN RELATION TO MATHEMATICS ANXIETY AND SELF-EFFICACY

Abstract

Achievement of students in Mathematics subject is affected by many factors and it is essential to show deep concern for those factors. By removing or controlling negative factors, learning of Mathematics may be enhanced. Both mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy are potential variables for mathematics achievement. Keeping the aforesaid issue in mind the present problem was taken for extensive and detailed study. The main objective of the study was to find out the effect of mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy on mathematics achievement. A sample of 200 class XI students of Mathematics stream were pulled randomly from five different schools. All the schools were private schools situated in Jamshedpur city of CBSE, New Delhi. Students from two genders were included in the sample. Three self constructed tools were used in the study. Mathematics Achievement Test was used to measure achievement in mathematics. Mathematics Anxiety Scale and Mathematics Self-Efficacy Assessment Scale were used to measure mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy respectively. Mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy both were found to be creating significant difference in mathematics achievement. mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy were found to be significantly correlated with mathematics achievement.
