This investigation present the assessment of ambient air quality carried out at an opencast coal mining area in Madhya Pradesh state of India. Open cast mining operations involve the removal of huge quantities of overburden, dumping and backfilling of the excavated area. Open cast mining activities generate a large number of waste rocks and tailings which get deposited at the surface. The land surface is damaged and the waste rocks and tailings are often very unstable and will become sources of pollution. Opencast coal mining creates more air pollution problem in respect of dust and the fines contain coal particles, benzene, soluble matters etc. The study area has been described and the sources of air pollution were identified. Methodology adopted for the selection of air monitoring to evaluate the impacts on air environment due to coal mining activities have been discussed.The ambient air quality survey was carried out in june,2021 four different locations with respect to SPM, PM10, PM2.5, NO2 and SO2 was always found below the permissible limit at all the sampling site. SO2 was found absent in air samples.
