Title

A PILOT STUDY ON THE CONSTRUCTIVE APPROACH IN EVALUATING ENGLISH AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN KOLKATA

Abstract

This pilot study investigates the effectiveness of the constructive approach in evaluating English language proficiency among secondary school students in Kolkata. Recognizing the limitations of traditional assessment methods, the research aims to explore how constructive assessment practices can enhance student engagement, motivation, and language proficiency. The study employs a mixed-methods design, integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data from 100 secondary school students and 10 English teachers across various schools. Quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires that measured student motivation and perceptions of constructive assessment methods. Additionally, pre- and post-intervention assessments evaluated students’ speaking and writing skills, revealing significant improvements in average scores from 65% to 82% (p < 0.01). Qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with teachers and classroom observations, providing insights into the implementation challenges and successes of constructive assessment practices. Results indicate that 75% of students reported increased engagement and motivation when participating in constructive assessments, and qualitative findings reveal a notable shift in classroom dynamics, with enhanced student interaction and collaboration. Teachers expressed positive experiences but also highlighted challenges in managing the transition from traditional to constructive assessment methods, indicating the need for targeted professional development. The study’s findings support the principles outlined in the National Education Policy (2020), which advocates for more holistic evaluation methods in education. By demonstrating the positive impact of constructive assessments on language proficiency and student engagement, this research contributes to the discourse on effective teaching and assessment strategies in English language education. The study concludes with recommendations for future research directions, including longitudinal studies, comparative analyses, and investigations into technology integration in constructive assessment practices. By addressing the identified challenges and expanding the scope of research, educators can better implement constructive approaches to language assessment, ultimately enhancing student learning outcomes and preparing them for success in a globalized context
