Title

A PILOT STUDY ON THE CONSTRUCTIVE APPROACH IN LEARNING ENGLISH AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN KOLKATA

Abstract

This pilot study investigates the effectiveness of the constructive approach in enhancing English language learning among secondary school students in Kolkata. Recognizing the challenges faced by students in mastering English, the study seeks to explore how active, collaborative learning strategies can improve language proficiency, engagement, and attitudes toward learning. The research involves 60 students from two secondary schools, employing a mixed-methods design that includes pre- and post-intervention surveys, classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with teachers, and performance assessments. Findings reveal a significant improvement in students’ overall language proficiency, with an average increase of 20% in skills such as speaking, writing, and listening following the implementation of constructive strategies. Classroom observations indicate heightened student engagement, with learners actively participating in discussions, group projects, and other interactive activities. Additionally, surveys show a notable shift in attitudes, with many students reporting increased motivation and a more positive perception of English learning. Despite these positive outcomes, the study identifies challenges in the effective implementation of the constructive approach, including time constraints, large class sizes, and a need for teacher training. These barriers emphasize the importance of institutional support and professional development in facilitating the transition to constructivist methodologies. The implications of this study suggest a need for educational policy reforms that promote the adoption of constructivist strategies in language education. By enhancing teacher training and revising curricula to incorporate collaborative learning, schools can create more engaging and effective English language learning environments. This study contributes to the broader discourse on innovative teaching methods and calls for further research to explore the long-term effects and scalability of the constructive approach in diverse educational contexts.
