Title

PILOT STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING APPROACH ON SELF-CONCEPT AND ACHIEVEMENT FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN 24 PARGANAS, WEST BENGAL

Abstract

This pilot study examines the effectiveness of the Cooperative Learning approach in enhancing self-concept and academic achievement among secondary school students in 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The study involved two groups of students: an experimental group exposed to Cooperative Learning strategies and a control group taught using traditional methods. A pre-test and post-test were administered to measure changes in self-concept and academic achievement, with data collected from 100 students (50 in each group). Descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and independent t-tests were used to analyze the data. The findings indicate that the experimental group showed significant improvements in both self-concept and academic achievement compared to the control group. The mean self-concept score for the experimental group increased from 32.4 to 38.7, and the academic achievement score rose from 68.4 to 78.5. In contrast, the control group demonstrated minimal change in both self-concept and academic achievement, with pre-test and post-test scores remaining relatively stable. The results of the paired t-tests for both self-concept and achievement in the experimental group were statistically significant, supporting the hypothesis that Cooperative Learning positively affects these outcomes. The independent t-tests further confirmed that the differences between the experimental and control groups were significant, indicating that the Cooperative Learning approach was more effective than traditional teaching methods in fostering positive self-concept and improving academic performance. This study concludes that Cooperative Learning is an effective pedagogical strategy that not only enhances academic achievement but also boosts students' self-esteem. These findings suggest that educators should consider incorporating Cooperative Learning techniques to improve student outcomes. Future research should explore its long-term effects and applicability to diverse educational settings.
