Title

EFFECTIVENESS OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING APPROACH IN THE TEACHING OF SOCIAL STUDIES FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN 24 PARGANAS, WEST BENGAL

Abstract

This pilot study investigates the effectiveness of the Cooperative Learning Approach (CLA) in the teaching of Social Studies among secondary school students in the 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The primary objective of the study was to assess whether CLA improves academic performance, student engagement, and attitudes compared to traditional teaching methods. A total of two groups—an experimental group using cooperative learning and a control group receiving traditional instruction—were assessed through pre-tests, post-tests, classroom observations, student questionnaires, and teacher interviews. The findings of the study revealed that students in the cooperative learning group showed a significant improvement in academic achievement, as evidenced by higher post-test scores. Classroom observations indicated that cooperative learning fostered greater student engagement, with increased participation, collaboration, and critical thinking. Additionally, students in the experimental group expressed more positive attitudes toward the learning process, enjoying the collaborative nature of the activities and feeling more motivated to learn. The study concludes that cooperative learning is an effective pedagogical approach that not only enhances academic performance but also promotes active participation and positive attitudes towards learning. The implications of these findings suggest that cooperative learning should be incorporated into secondary school curricula, with appropriate teacher training and strategies to address challenges in group management.
