Title

Physicochemical Assessment of River Water: Evaluating Quality and Environmental Impact

Abstract

This study investigates the physicochemical properties of river water to assess its quality and evaluate the environmental impact of human activities. Key parameters, including pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity, and nutrient levels (nitrates, phosphates), were analyzed at multiple sampling points along the river across different seasons. The results indicate significant spatial and seasonal variations in water quality, with elevated levels of pollutants downstream due to industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, and urban wastewater. The findings reveal that some parameters exceed permissible limits set by international and local water quality standards, posing risks to aquatic ecosystems, agriculture, and public health. Seasonal trends highlight increased pollution during the monsoon due to surface runoff and reduced dilution capacity during the dry season. These results emphasize the need for targeted pollution control measures, sustainable agricultural practices, and advanced wastewater treatment. This study provides valuable insights into river water quality dynamics and serves as a baseline for developing effective water resource management and conservation strategies.
