Title

PILOT STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF EDUCATIONAL STRESS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AMONG SECONDARY AND HIGHER SECONDARY STUDENTS

Abstract

Educational stress is a critical factor affecting the academic performance and psychological well-being of students. This pilot study examines the relationship between educational stress and academic achievement among secondary and higher secondary students in Varanasi City. The study aims to identify key stressors, their impact on performance, and coping mechanisms used by students. Through a small-scale survey and interviews, the findings will contribute to a better understanding of how stress affects students and provide insights for educators and policymakers to create stress-reducing strategies. This pilot study investigates the impact of educational stress on the academic performance of secondary and higher secondary students. Educational stress, resulting from factors such as examination pressure, heavy academic workload, parental expectations, and peer competition, has been identified as a significant contributor to the academic challenges faced by students. The study aimed to explore the relationship between stress levels and academic performance, while also identifying common stressors and coping mechanisms among students. Data were collected through surveys administered to 200 students from secondary and higher secondary schools. The results revealed a strong correlation between high levels of stress and lower academic performance, highlighting the detrimental effects of excessive academic pressure. Students who reported experiencing moderate stress levels, however, showed better academic performance, suggesting that a certain degree of stress can motivate students to perform well. The study also identified common stressors, including examination pressure, heavy workloads, and parental expectations. In terms of coping strategies, students employed various techniques such as time management, peer and parental support, and relaxation methods like meditation. Based on these findings, the study recommends the implementation of stress management programs in schools, including workshops on time management, mental health counseling, and stress-relief activities. This would help students manage academic pressure more effectively and improve their overall academic experience. The study also suggests further research into the long-term effects of educational stress on students' mental health and well-being.
