Title

PILOT STUDY ON INFLUENCE OF SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS ON EDUCATIONAL STRESS, FAMILY SUPPORT, AND ADJUSTMENT PATTERNS IN VARANASI CITY

Abstract

This pilot study investigates the influence of socioeconomic status (SES) on educational stress, family support, and adjustment patterns among students in Varanasi, a city known for its socio-economic diversity. The study aims to explore how students from varying SES backgrounds experience educational pressures, the role of family support in mitigating or exacerbating these stress levels, and how students adapt academically and socially. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data from a sample of students from lower, middle, and higher SES backgrounds in Varanasi. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions, exploring aspects such as academic stress, coping mechanisms, and family dynamics. The findings reveal that students from lower SES backgrounds experience significantly higher levels of educational stress compared to their peers from higher SES backgrounds. Financial constraints, limited access to educational resources, and concerns about future opportunities contribute to the heightened stress levels. Family support, particularly emotional and financial, plays a crucial role in alleviating stress, with students from higher SES groups benefiting from stronger and more consistent support systems. Additionally, students from lower SES backgrounds tend to display maladaptive coping strategies such as disengagement, while students from higher SES backgrounds often utilize more adaptive strategies like seeking academic help and engaging in extracurricular activities. The study underscores the critical role of family support and its impact on stress and adjustment patterns, highlighting the need for targeted educational policies that address the challenges faced by students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. It suggests that educators, policymakers, and families collaborate to create supportive environments that foster resilience and academic success among students across all SES levels. The study also calls for further research to explore these dynamics in greater depth across different regions and educational settings.
