BACKGROUND: Children pain perception is mainly due to the fear of needles that they encounter when they are young if they have persistent pain, it will be exhibited as tomophobia and it will be carried out to the coming generations. AIM: To compare the pain perception and dental fear and anxiety of insulin syringe and conventional syringes in reducing pain perception, dental fear, and anxiety during while giving LA using local infiltration technique. MATERIALS METHOD: Two hundred and fifty children in the age group 6 to 10 years who required LA administration for dental treatment were selected for this study. Patients were randomly divided in two equally group i.e., Study group - Insulin syringe group and Control group – Conventional syringe group. Pain perception and dental fear and anxiety was evaluated using sem scale, vpt test in both the groups RESULTS: The prevalence of dental fear was 59.46 % and the strongest fears are associated with conventional syringe injections (91.9%) compared to the insulin syringe injection (27.7%). The children who showed positive behaviour; results recorded in the insulin syringe group at baseline was 48%, postoperative was 72 and 3 month follow up was 96% in comparison with conventional syringe group at baseline was 8%, postoperative was 10% and 3 month follow up was 4% respectively (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Insulin syringes can be used as an effective means to reduce the intensity of pain and tomophobia due to anticipatory dental anxiety for local anaesthetic injection procedures in pediatric dental patients.
