Title

A Pilot study to examine the impact of Respectful maternity care on pain perception and labour outcome among Parturient women at selected Public health facility at Erode.

Abstract

Backround of the study: Respectful maternity care (RMC) is not only a crucial component of quality of care, it is a human right. Maternity care givers have the potential to uplift and soothe or cause emotional trauma and long-term harm to the parturient women during labour. Either way, memories of childbearing experiences stay with women throughout their lifetime. While many interventions aim to improve access to skilled birth care, less attention has been focused on the quality of relationships with caregivers during maternity care. However, evidence suggests that fear of the disrespect and abuse that women too often encounter in facility-based maternity care is a more powerful deterrent to use of skilled care in countries with a high burden of maternal mortality than commonly recognized barriers such as cost or distance. Methods:Quasi experimental design was adapted in this study. Purposive sampling technique was used for selecting the 30 samples, in which 15 samples for experimental group and 15 for control group. The tools used for the study were sociodemographic variables, Visual analog scale and Observational rating scale. Results: In experimental group, 80% of the parturient mothers were having mild level of pain perception score, 20.00% of them were having moderate level of score and none of them having severe level of pain perception score. In control group, none of them were having poor level of Pain perception score, 40.00% of them having moderate level of score and 60.00% of them having severe level of pain perception score. Concerned with maternal outcome, In experimental group, none of them were having poor maternal outcome score, 20.00% of them having moderate level of score and 80% of them having good maternal outcome score. In control group, none of them were having poor maternal outcome score, 73.33% of them having moderate level of score and 26.67% of them having good maternal outcome score. Regarding newborn outcome, in experimental group, none of them were having poor newborn outcome score, 13.33% of them having moderate level of score and 86.67% of them having good newborn outcome score. In control group, none of them were having poor newborn outcome score, 80.00% of them having moderate level of score and 20.00% of them having good newborn outcome score. Conclusion: The findings of the study revealed that Respectful maternity care was significant in reducing pain perception during labour process and improving maternal and newborn outcome.
