Title

Electoral Reforms in India: Issues and Challenges

Authors

Abstract

India's freedom is based on the end of European imperialism and it marked a new beginning for the rule of the Indian people through democratic principles, values and norms. Democracy, equality and fundamental rights became the core values of the Indian Constitution. The Indian Constitution recognized parliamentary democracy because the freedom struggle gave Indians an experience of democratic values. Democracy believes in people and their political rights. Parliamentary democracies have taken steps to protect democratic principles, trust and values from structural deficiencies. In this regard, electoral processes and electoral politics are central to the strengthening of parliamentary democratic institutions in India. Free and fair elections are the foundation of a successful democracy. Today the question of electoral reform arises due to the growing deterioration in electoral politics. There is a dire need to strengthen the electoral system of our nation so that the true potential of a democratic system can be realized. Trust and confidence among citizens in the electoral system are essential for strengthening a democratic government. This paper assesses the issues, challenges and initiatives from time to time taken by the government of India and other institutions with respect to electoral reform in India.
