Blood is a bodily fluid that carries metabolic waste products away from the cells while also supplying nutrients and oxygen to the cells. Peripheral blood and peripheral blood cells are terms used to describe blood in the circulatory system. Blood plasma suspends blood cells, which make up blood. Plasma, which makes up 55% of blood fluid, is primarily composed of water (92% by volume), proteins, carbohydrates, hormones, mineral ions, carbon dioxide (plasma serves as the primary medium for the movement of excretory products), and blood cells. Blood banks are used to store human donors' donated blood, which is then used for transfusions. Humans have numerous distinct blood types, the most significant of which are the Rhesus and ABO blood group systems. Crossmatching is done to make sure that a suitable blood product is transfused since transfusion of blood from an incompatible blood type can result in serious, sometimes deadly consequences.
