Authors

Abstract

Education plays a key role in the development of a nation and the development of the education system of any nation is largely dependent on the quality, competence, and commitment of its teachers. Education Commission (1964-66) has described very beautifully that, “of all the different factors which influence the quality of education and its contribution to national development, the quality, competence and character of teachers are undoubtedly the most significant”. So, we can say that the teaching competency of a teacher is of paramount importance and teaching is an act that requires many skills to be united into a complete whole. A teacher must practice many skills simultaneously for effective teaching. Though these skills are different entities, a teacher’s duty is to unite them purposefully for the good of his objectives. Such skills are widely spread across the stages of pre-teaching activity, while teaching activity and post-teaching activity. It’s when a teacher occupies an authenticity in all these stages that we can state that he or she has achieved the teaching competency. The teaching competency of a teacher helps himself to grow personally and make his students and organization grow perfectly. As the profession of teaching has direct and indirect relations with society, the teaching competency of teachers will be reflected in its members. The highly competent teachers can come up with better results whereas the less competent or incompetent teachers will have to always blame others. A teacher ‘s competency in 21st century, according to UNESCO (2008) is indicated by the fact that a competent teacher should have firm knowledge of the curriculum of his/her subject and to use technology in the curriculum.
