Bernard Malamud’s novel The Assistant is a novel about the predicament of a family in order to live better. The predicament comes from within the characters , where the members of the family understands each other and move on with the life that they have to live. There is a bond of love between husband and wife, father and daughter. Each one suffer for the other and the novel examines acutely into the complex web of family relationships, portraying their difficulties, conflicts, and persistent significance in shaping the lives of the characters. Morris Bober’s predicament is at the central of the novel, symbolizing the fine balance between integrity and austerity in an adverse setting.
