Title

Knowledge Regarding Neonatal Jaundice Management among Mothers at a Tertiary Level Hospital in Dinajpur City, Bangladesh

Abstract

The descriptive type of cross sectional study was carried out in order to assess the knowledge on neonatal jaundice management among the respondents who were 184 in number in a selected tertiary level hospital in Dinajpur city, Bangladesh. It was found from the study that of the respondents 64.7% was in the age group 18-25 years and 35.3% was in 26-33 years of age group with mean age 24.95±3.324 years. Study also showed that of the respondent 61.4% were Muslim. 29.9% of the respondents completed primary level of education. Among all the respondents 34.2% had monthly family income as BDT 5001-10000. When occupation was considered of the respondents 58.7% was house wife. The respondents 76.1% live in nuclear family where as 23.9% live in joint family. Most of the respondents (76.6%) received anti-natal care. Regarding number of pregnancy 51.1% of the respondents reported as multipara and 48.9% as Primipara. Majority of the respondents (83.7%) had heard about neonatal jaundice previously where as 16.3% did not hear. Relating the source of information about NNJ 34.2% of the respondents got information about NNJ from health care workers. Majority of the respondents (84.8%) reported that their previous baby was not affected with jaundice but 15.2% replied positively. Majority of the respondents answered the true answer regarding knowledge related question no NNJ. Regarding knowledge on preventive measures of NNJ it was found that among the respondents 63.0% had knowledge on “Putting jaundice baby under direct sun light”, 29.9% said “Herbal remedies”, and 7.1% had knowledge on “Keep the baby under special light (phototherapy)”. Another major finding from the study was that 6.0% respondents had excellent level of knowledge regarding NNJ, whereas 58.7%, 20.1% and 15.2% had satisfactory, good and poor level of knowledge respectively. There is an association between history of jaundice in previous issue of pregnancy and knowledge of the respondents on prevention of neonatal jaundice, (p= 0.001). Awareness should be created among the expecting mothers about neonatal jaundice and encourage them to take preventive measures to avert neonatal mortality and morbidity.
