Title

“Biochemical profiling in different genotypes of rice (Oryza sativa L.)”

Abstract

Rice is a cultivated plant of the Poaceae family and staple food of most Asian people, rice cultivation and genetic modification has been the subject of significant research and development efforts, particularly to improve production and grain quality. Lodging is becoming a significant factor in rice production, increasing the time and cost of harvest and often resulting in significant yield loss. One approach is to find a new plant type with the ideal morphology, large panicles, photosynthetic efficiency, and lodging resistance. The experiment was carried out at Research cum Instructional Farm, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, College of Agriculture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, (India). The experimental materials comprised of 32 genotype of rice including four checks namely IR-64, Indira aerobic-1, Pusa 1121, Dubraj selection-1. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design in 2 replications with the objectives of estimation of cellulose content in different genotypes. Cellulose profiling reveales that rice varieties differed in cellulose contents of the culm. Total cellulose content was high in Basha bhog genotype, Jasmine scented, Rajim 14, Shree ram and Dudh nag which were obtained as lodging resistance genotypes whereas, Dubraj and Pihi kirwa exhibited lowest cellulose content and showed high lodging incidence.

Key Words

Rice, Cellulose, lodging grain yield.
