Title

A Review on the Comparison of Psychosocial Factors associated with Relapse in Alcohol Dependence and Opioid Dependence

Abstract

Substance use disorders, particularly alcohol and opioid abuse, are common health problems with significant personal and social impacts. Relapse is a common issue in substance use disorders, with studies showing that 65-70% of abstinent individuals relapse within a year, particularly within the first three months of abstinence. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), alcohol causes 3 million deaths annually, accounting for 5.3% of all deaths worldwide. Research shows that most abstinent individuals relapse within a year. Due to the significant effects of biopsychosocial factors on individuals, alcohol dependence and opioid dependence rank as the most addictive drugs and pose serious health risks to the general public. Many factors, including psychological, genetic, environmental, neuro-biological, peer pressure, and socioeconomic factors, might contribute to alcohol and opioid dependence. Understanding these factors is crucial for finding effective strategies to prevent and treat alcohol and opioid dependence. This study reviews various psychosocial factors associated with relapse in alcohol dependence and opioid dependence patients and also explains the similarities and differences between the factors involved.
