ABSTRACT IMPACT OF SELF HELP GROUPS AND WOMEN EMPOWERMENT *Dr.G.Jayachendra Reddy Gmail: jayasku@gmail.com **Dr.B.Sreenivasa Reddy Gmail: sinuptp123@gmail.com Empowerment of women is gaining ground and an added significance in the Indian context owing to their profusive participation in developmental activities. Women entrepreneurship is the process where women take lead and organize a business or industry and provide employment opportunities to others. Though women entrepreneurship is a recent phenomenon in India, which came into prominence in late 1970s, now more and more women are venturing as entrepreneurs into all kinds of businesses and economic activities and service sectors. Though at the initial stage women entrepreneurship developed only at urban areas, later it has extended its wings to rural and semi-urban areas too. SHGs are popularly known as DWCRA groups, started as thrift and credit groups where women are saving rupee a day” started lending money to group corpus consists of group savings, government assistance and bank loan. SHG movement is a mass movement, as Andhra Pradesh alone has half of the groups existing in India. The objective is to organize rural poor into sel12f help groups through the process of social mobilization, their training, infrastructure, revolving fund to SHGs and subsidy for economic activity are the important components under this scheme.
