Title

Enchanting Mythologies and Folktales: From Timeless Treasures to Contemporary Classics in Children's Literature

Abstract

Abstract: Folktales have held a timeless allure, captivating the imaginations of generations and serving as a rich repository of cultural wisdom and heritage. This paper will explore the presence and evolution of folktales in children's literature, spanning from classic renditions to contemporary adaptations, with a special focus on the collections of Devdutt Pattanaik and Sudha Murty. Children's literature has long been enmeshed with folk narratives, providing young readers with a window into the vibrant tapestry of India's diverse cultures and traditions. Classic works such as Amar Chitra Katha and Panchatantra have not only entertained but also imparted moral and ethical lessons through age-old stories. In recent years, authors like Devdutt Pattanaik and Sudha Murty have breathed new life into Indian folktales by retelling them in a contemporary context. Devdutt Pattanaik, a renowned mythologist, has skillfully adapted ancient myths and legends for children, making them more accessible and relevant in today's world. His works like "Pashu: Animal Tales from Hindu Mythology" and "The Boys Who Fought: The Mahabharata for Children" offer fresh perspectives on these age-old stories while preserving their essence. Sudha Murty, a prolific writer and philanthropist, has also made a significant contribution to the world of children's literature through her retellings of folktales and mythological stories. Her collections, including "The Magic of the Lost Temple" and "Grandparents' Bag of Stories," bridge the gap between generations, ensuring that traditional narratives are passed down with enthusiasm and understanding. In this context, his study delves into the evolving landscape of children's literature, where folktales continue to be a source of inspiration and learning for young readers. It will examine how Devdutt Pattanaik and Sudha Murty have reimagined these narratives to make them more accessible, relatable, and engaging for contemporary children while preserving the cultural richness they encapsulate. Further, the study will explore how these authors help young readers not only connect with their cultural heritage but also gain valuable insights into the moral and ethical dimensions of life.
