The behaviour patterns of the characters in Vijay Tendulkar’s plays are assertively subjugated by their inner tendencies towards savagery and brutality, resulting in their infliction of pain, torture, and violence on women. His famous Marathi play Sakharam Binder is a stunning exposure of animalistic qualities like violence, brutality, ferocity and cruelty ingrained in men. The character of Sakharam, a bookbinder who lives by his own rules, serves as a stark representation of brute force and cruelty as he exploits helpless women for his gratification. The play’s brutal depiction of gender dynamics and the dehumanizing treatment of women serve as a critique of societal norms and the underlying barbarism in human behaviour. By examining key scenes and dialogues, this paper underscores the transformation of cultured individuals into primal beings under critical circumstances, ultimately presenting a morbid reflection of a society where women are often voiceless victims of male aggression. Tendulkar's Sakharam Binder thus emerges as a powerful narrative that exposes the latent animality within man, challenging audiences to confront the uncomfortable truths about human nature.
