Title

World as Lure and Detritus: Reflections on the Select Projects of Vivan Sundaram

Abstract

The artist Vivan Sundaram had been a major presence since the i980s in the Indian Art scenario. Having been trained in MSU, Baroda, Slade School, London and having been tutored by the legendary artists like K.G. Subramanyan ( in Baroda) and R.B. Kitaj (in Slade), he lived through the turbulent period of Europe and England to have been a prime initiator of what came to be known as Narrative school. He subsequently experimented in different genres of contemporary art, giving rise to collaborations and combines, and the grand installatory practices as in the “Towards Freedom “project, on the occasion of the celebration of 50 years of freedom at the Victoria Memorial, Calcutta/Kolkata. his works touched upon the grand narratives of war, pogroms and also the micro narratives hidden within them from his painterly articulations as in “Guddo” or “In the Room” to “Long Nights” and the “Brief Rise of Marianne Hussain” installation or even the Bazaars full of found objects. His works were avant-garde in spirit, which remains singularly unmatched, in scale or in depth so far. Vivan just passed away in 2023. Leaving a legacy of multiple sets of interventions. The following is a brief retake of his journey in this essay.
