Title

Applying Image Processing to Determine Product Placement and Availability on the Shelf in Retail Stores

Abstract

The absence of product availability and improper shelf arrangements in retail stores can result in reduced sales. Visual inspections are carried out by both retailer employees and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) company staff to identify out-of-stock or misplaced products. This paper introduces a method to automate manual inspection processes, utilizing image processing techniques in MATLAB 2013a. This approach not only recognizes and tallies front-facing products but also identifies empty shelf spaces. Furthermore, it can be applied to images from video streams, such as security cameras, to count visible units of a specific product on a shelf and determine the correct orientation. The proposed image processing method primarily facilitates the proper positioning of products on the front row of shelves. While it may seem limiting for inventory management, it is crucial for product manufacturers to lease shelf space with designated positions, compelling retailers to place specific products in assigned locations. The paper's innovation lies in extending feature extraction in image processing to highlight and rectify misplaced items on shelves. Importantly, the implemented solution does not involve significant additional infrastructure costs.
