This article examines the role of the criminal justice system with a specific focus on the plight of women prisoners. Despite constituting a minority within the prison population, women face unique challenges that stem from systemic biases and intersecting forms of oppression. Drawing on a gendered perspective, this paper explores the criminalization of women, challenges faced by women prisoners, and the inter sectionality of race, class, and gender in shaping their experiences. It advocates for comprehensive reforms grounded in gender-responsive principles to address the distinct needs of women behind bars, including trauma-informed care, alternative sentencing options, and community-based support services. By prioritizing the rights and dignity of women prisoners, we can work towards a more equitable and just criminal justice system.
