Title

THE REPRESENTATION OF CHIVALRIC CODE IN SAISWAROOPA IYER’S NOVEL RUKMINI

Abstract

Abstract The Indian Epics, the Ramayana, and the Mahabharata are both romantic narratives and epics that recount the tales of courageous individuals, some of whom are even divine. They represent comprehensive works of literature that provide not only a moral framework but also an ethical and social philosophy, along with speculative analyses of the challenges confronting humanity. These epics are emblematic of patriarchal culture, wherein women are expected to adhere to the rules established by men. Throughout history, women have encountered numerous challenges, yet they have consistently confronted adversity with valor, from ancient times to the present day. Despite being often portrayed as subordinate to men, Saiswaroopa Iyer's novel Rukmini illustrates that women not only challenge male decisions but also play significant roles in various circumstances. Hence, it cannot be asserted that women in antiquity lacked individuality and were entirely subservient. Even within the patriarchal society depicted in Rukmini, women are not to be perceived as weak, despite their apparent powerlessness. They fulfill their roles as wives, mothers, and daughters according to societal norms. Their determination, intellect, and inner resilience imbue them with the courage and endurance to confront life's adversities. This paper aims to examine the portrayal of Rukmini's valor and political influence in Saiswaroopa Iyer's novel Rukmini.
