This paper describes overview of the skills and knowledge of LIS professionals working in a digital era and related researches. It presents key skills and competencies of a new generation of LIS professionals which can be classified as personal skills, generic skills, and professional which can be classified as personal skills, generic skills, and professional skills. The main purpose of this study is to identify the essential skills and competencies sought by prospective employers for library and information science (LIS) positions in India. Findings of this study is to help develop or refine focused library and information studies course curricula that meet the needs of the local workforce and also guide or improve national or local professional development programmes. Library professionals have to play different roles that require different skills, from the old culture to the new trend.
