Abstract
Introduction:
Vicharchika is included in Kushtha as one of its types under the heading of Kshudra Kushtha. Acharya Charaka mentioned Kapha Dosha predominance in Vicharchika. While Acharya Sushrut stated Pitta Dosha predominance. The clinical features of Vicharchika such as kandu, pidaka, shyavata and bahustrava resemble eczema in modern science which manifests in the form of pruritis, burning, oozing, papules, vesicles, dryness, scaling, discoloration and lichenization of skin.
Vicharchika can be seen at any age but frequently seen in young age. Eczema is one of the major public health problems worldwide. Its prevalence in children varies from 0.7% to 26%, while in adult it may range from 1% to 3%. Interestingly, its prevalence is much lower in developing countries when compared with industrialized nation. It’s been reported that in children, males show an increased incidence while in adult patients, females out number males.
Due to exposure to occupational factor, environmental factors and mental stress. Junk food, irregular eating habits, repressing natural desires, using cosmetics and other chemicals, a polluted environment, a demanding existence, and emotional disorders all unquestionably play a significant role in the emergence of Vicharchika nowadays.
Modern pharmacology offers treatment for the symptom of eczema. However, it does not provide treatment for the root. Therefore, recurrence is very common. Ayurveda believes that all Dosha in balance is essential for well-being. Ayurveda offers treatment for the root of eczema by cleansing vitiated Dosha and balancing the Dosha and Dhatus.
Materials and Methods: From the Brihattrayi and its commentaries, the Laghutrayi, and other Ayurvedic texts, information regarding the Vicharchika (Eczema) was obtained. Also, the pubmed, research gate, google scholar, Ayush dhara etc search engine are reviewed.
Results: In general, all the Kushtha are said to possess a Tridoshaja origin. In Vicharchika, kandu is caused due to Kapha dosha, srava is due to Pitta dosha and shyavata is caused due to Vata dosha. In Ayurveda kustha and Kshudra Kustha are broad concepts with pointed principle of management.
Conclusion: In today’s scenario due to unhealthy food habits and sedentary lifestyle there is increase in rate of skin disorders. Due to its chronic and recurrent nature, Vicharchika has a great impact on the quality of life of the patients. Ayurveda has lot of potential in the treatment aspect by using Shodhan and shaman chikitsa. By following Ayurvedic treatment modalities, recurrence can be avoided and the disease can be cured.
